First-Generation, Limited-Income Students

The path to college isn't the same for everyone. The FLI Network aims to make everyone feel supported and empowered during their time at Hopkins.

If you’re the first student in your family to attend college, know there is a network of people, offices, and programs at Johns Hopkins dedicated to making sure your transition to college is successful, and you’re well prepared to meet your full potential throughout your time here.

First-generation college students are typically identified as students whose parents, guardians, or other custodial family members have not completed a four-year degree. Several first-generation students also receive federal Pell grant assistance, as their families may have limited financial resources. This group of students is known as FLI within the Hopkins community.

At Johns Hopkins, there are many staff members and campus services to guide you and help you navigate the many resources available to you. This website seeks to provide you with resources, insight, and advice that can help you thrive and succeed on campus as you pursue your degree. We also encourage you to join the FLI Network to stay up-to-date with events, new resources and services, and opportunities (e.g., scholarships, jobs, internships, research, and more).

Find your people! Navigating college is overwhelming, so I couldn’t imagine doing it alone. A lot of my friends are also FLI, so we were able to relate in experiences growing up. Whether it’s joining clubs or studying for the same class together, having your own village that you can lean on in times of happiness or trials is a necessity.
